Original Abstract Art & Lifescapes by Cheryl Harrison MA

Welcome to my online studio. I am a contemporary Australian abstract artist with a career spanning over twenty-five years. My work focuses on creating large-scale abstract paintings on canvas - pieces I call my "lifescapes".

Every brushstroke, tonal wash, and delicate mark on my canvas is a direct emotional translation of life experiences, travel and music. Your space deserves more than a predictable, mass-produced print. I paint from a place of absolute freedom to create one-of-a-kind statements that have texture, depth, and a true point of view. Whether it’s grounding an open-plan living area or commanding attention in a corporate entry, these paintings are meant to connect with you intuitively - forever revealing new details and making a bare wall feel whole.

My creative path has been defined by two of the world's most iconic artistic environments. In the late 1990s, I relocated to the United Kingdom, finding my home and studio in the historic, light-charged art colony of St Ives in Cornwall.

Living in St.Ives served as my creative apprenticeship. I was just the other side of my BA in Visual Arts and found myself immersed for five years in this mecca for modern art, a place that was crowded with the last great postmodern British artists, including Sandra Blow, Terry Frost, and Barrie Cooke. The legacies of British Modernism fundamentally shaped my understanding of form, texture, and light.

Upon returning to Australia, I formalised my decades of hands-on practice by completing my Masters in Visual Arts at the Queensland College of Art (QCA) in Brisbane under the direct mentorship of Jenny Watson.

Driven by an inherent desire for open space and to somehow recapture the romance of St.Ives and seaside living, I eventually relocated to the far northern tropical edge of Queensland. Today, I create from my private sun-drenched 'Art Shouse' studio in Port Douglas. The drama and whimsy of life in Cornwall, the vibrant energy of the tropics  and my urban explorations abroad - Japan in particular - provide the core inspiration for my premium collections.

Resilience, Television Cameras, and Textured Canvases

Long before I dived head on into a lifetime of despair and self-loathing 😂, I built a career working in media as a professional television camera-woman. Operating broadcast cameras trained my eye to capture composition, hidden movement, and the dramatic interplay of shifting natural light - principles that guide my abstract expressionism today.

My choices and my creative process have also been profoundly shaped by navigating life with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Rather than letting physical challenges limit me, it has forced me to develop an intense, highly intentional relationship with my mediums. Every gestural mark and layer is a a storybook of physical movement and I'd like to think, resilience.

Major Career Milestones & Collectability

My original canvases are in private collectors and corporate curations across Australia, Europe, North America, and the Middle East.

The Art Shouse: A Creative Partnership

When I am not creating large gestural expressionist canvases or sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of our unique creative life via The Art Shouse : Our Tropical Build, my artistic world is shared with my life partner and fellow contemporary artist, PEZ (Perry). Working from our independent home studios in Tropical North Queensland, we balance two distinctly unique visual languages under one roof... well, two roofs (my studio's better😉). While my practice focuses on capturing the fluid landscapes and light of coastal environments in large-scale high-end, collectable paintings, he explores the bold, structural realities of modern culture. Crucially, PEZ also draws heavily on our local tropical environment for influence, weaving the raw energy of the region into his signature urban line art, figurative works, and original investment pieces. You can discover his latest collections directly via his official PEZ Art Website. Our creative synergy provides a constant source of inspiration, keeping our independent, professional studio practices deeply connected yet distinct.

FAQ's - Commissions

How much does a custom abstract art commission cost?

The investment for a custom abstract art commission depends entirely on the physical size of the canvas and the complexity of the project. I work transparently with collectors and interior designers to build cohesive palettes that match their spatial design requirements. For full details on the timeline, step-by-step development, and past project examples, please view my Commissions Page.

FAQ's - Framing & Shipping

How are large original canvas paintings shipped?

Oversized original canvases require specialised handling. All of my artwork is shipped in a roll to save costs so I can pass on those savings to my collectors. I offer framing for all of my sales within Australia. Once a buyer decides on their frame type, I  ship their artwork directly to my framer from my Port Douglas studio using trusted courier services. Once my framer receives the canvas and the artwork is framed they liaise with my collectors with either personal delivery details or door-to-door tracking  (anywhere in Australia - including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin and Hobart). All international purchases are shipped in a roll (no framing offered) via DHL Express with full insurance and tracking details.

How do I get my artwork stretched and framed in Australia?

I take care of it for you. When you order your painting within Australia, you make your selections. If you select a floating frame option, I will ship the rolled canvas safely to my trusted professional framer. They complete the high-end stretching and floating timber framing, then arrange a personal delivery or contact you directly with tracked courier details.

Why do you ship international orders as rolled canvases instead of framed or stretched paintings?

Shipping paintings as a rolled canvas is the single safest and most cost-effective method for international transit. Fully framed or stretched canvases are highly vulnerable to being punctured, dented, warped, or broken due to the complexities and rough handling of global shipping. Rolling the canvas securely in a heavy-duty tube eliminates these structural risks almost entirely while avoiding extreme shipping costs and high customs fees. This guarantees your artwork arrives in perfect condition and allows you to support a local craftsman in your hometown for the final stretching and framing.

How much does shipping cost?

Zilch, Nada, FREE!!

When will I receive my painting?
  • Orders within Australia: 3 to 4 weeks (subject to framing workload)
  • International Orders: 1 to 2 weeks

FAQ'S - Refunds

What is the return policy?
  • For ‘change of mind’ refunds on original artworks, I must pass on the cost of return shipping, this will be deducted from the refund amount once the painting has been returned – purchaser must contact me within 48 hours of receipt of artwork.
  • I cannot offer ‘change of mind’ refunds on Prints, these are considered final once purchased and shipped.
  • Any painting or print that is delivered damaged will be replaced.

Are any purchases final sale?
