The Collector’s Guide to Art Sizes and Framing: How to Choose the Perfect Piece for Your Space
As an abstract artist, there is nothing quite like the feeling of putting the final brushstrokes on a large, vibrant canvas in my studio. But for many contemporary art collectors, the journey doesn't end when a painting steals your heart online. The most common questions I hear from buyers are: Will this size work in my room? and How should I frame it to match my interior décor?
Choosing the right artwork scale and framing style can completely transform a room, turning a blank wall into a luxury residential statement. Whether you are eyeing an original large-scale canvas or curated limited-edition prints, here is my insider guide to choosing the perfect art dimensions and frames for your home.
1. Understanding Scale: What Art Sizes Work Best and Why?
A beautiful piece of modern abstract art should command attention without overwhelming the architecture. The secret lies in balancing the scale of the artwork with your furniture and wall dimensions.
Here is how to match contemporary art sizes to specific rooms:
Over the Sofa or Bed: The Statement Landscape
- The Golden Rule: 'Your artwork should span roughly 2/3 to 3/4 of the width of the furniture beneath it'... now, I don't subscribe to this one. I like my placement to almost match the width of complimentary furniture and in some cases go beyond, especially when you have high ceilings.
- Best Sizes: Large horizontal orientations like a 200 × 130 cm statement piece (similar to my works Deep Water Drift or Rock My World) work beautifully here.
- Why it works: An expansive horizontal painting anchors the room, drawing the eye across the space and creating a sense of luxury and balance.
Entryways and Hallways: The Vertical Focal Point
- The Golden Rule: Use vertical orientation to elongate the room and draw the eyes upward, capitalising on high ceilings.
- Best Sizes: Slimmer, elongated canvases like a 120 × 160 cm (like Sweet Things) or a standard vertical 100 × 150 cm layout (like Zest) work best in narrower transit zones.
- Why it works: Hallways lack furniture to anchor an artwork, so a bold vertical piece acts as its own architectural feature, greeting guests with immediate colour and depth.
Large Open-Plan Walls: The Statement Square
- The Golden Rule: Don't let a vast wall swallow your art. Go big, or group pieces together.
- Best Sizes: Commanding square dimensions like a 140 × 140 cm layout (such as Quiet Wild) provide a striking spatial anchor.
- Why it works: Square compositions feel incredibly modern and balanced. They perfectly disrupt the standard horizontal lines of open-plan living and dining areas.

2. To Frame or Not to Frame?
Once you have selected the ideal dimensions, the next step is choosing how to display it. For contemporary abstract art, the framing format changes the entire mood of the painting.
Through my online gallery, I offer several options to suit your personal style and interior design preferences:
| Framing Option | Visual Style | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|
| Floating Timber Frame | High-end, gallery aesthetic. Creates a subtle shadow gap around the painting. | Stretched original canvases and premium canvas reproductions. |
| Unstretched | Clean, modern, and crisp. | Clean spaces when the fluidity of the artwork wraps around the edges. |
| Unstretched (Rolled) | Flexible. The canvas arrives rolled securely in a heavy-duty tube. | International collectors or custom local framing projects. |
The Magic of the Floating Frame
For original abstract acrylic paintings, my absolute favourite presentation is a professionally stretched canvas paired with a floating frame.
Unlike traditional frames that cover the edge of the artwork, a floating frame sits slightly away from the canvas. This creates a subtle shadow line, making the artwork appear as though it is levitating inside the frame. It protects the edges while showcasing 100% of the painted brushstrokes.

3. Selecting the Right Frame Colour for Your Décor
The frame should act as a bridge between the artwork and your interior palette. To keep choices clean and elegant, my studio offers three premium, museum-grade timber finishes:
- Natural Timber: Perfect for contemporary Australian, coastal, or Scandinavian interiors. The light, warm wood grain complements earthy undertones and allows vibrant blues, forest greens, and pinks to pop beautifully.
- Sleek Black: Bold and architectural. A black frame defines the boundaries of the artwork, accentuating darker line work and high-contrast abstract compositions. It looks incredibly striking in modern industrial or minimalist luxury homes.
- Crisp White: Seamless and airy. If you want the artwork to feel like an extension of a crisp white gallery wall, this is your best option. It brings a fresh, bright, and completely unobstructed focus to the colours within the piece.
